Marcos Kyprianou for president!

EARLIER this month I attended a lecture given in Nicosia, by a German doctor, about the EU’s policy on cancer treatment. The lecture was given at the annual medical seminar held in memory of Marianna Lordou.

EU Health Commissioner, Marcos Kyprianou also spoke briefly about the subject, which falls within his responsibilities, and he was impressive. His speech had substance, which is not something Cypriot politicians have accustomed us to. He was concise, avoided hyperbole and vagueness, showing that he had excellent command of his subject. He focused on six points without uttering a single superfluous word. Hearing him, I thought of his late father, Spyros, and automatically made the comparison. What a difference!
We all know that working for the EU in Brussels forces our politicians to become more serious, more focused and more responsible. And Marcos exhibited all these qualities in abundance. I was so pleasantly surprised that I told every friend I met about how impressive our EU Commissioner had been.

A couple of days later, the views expressed by Kyprianou in an interview he gave to an Athens paper were reported in Cyprus. Some of the friends I had spoken to about Marcos, called to tell me how right my impression of him seemed to be.

I will not go into the views expressed in the interview, as they have already been published. It suffices to mention that what he said was exactly the same as what this column has been arguing for the last three years; and more or less the same views as the opposition’s, which invariably provokes a collective, rabid reaction by the pro-government parties. For instance, Kyprianou’s observation that we have a habit of labelling all those who disagree with us at the EU as ‘enemies’ and ‘anti-Greek’, has been made on countless occasions by this column.

If you strip Kyprianou’s comments of the diplomatic wrapping that he was obliged to use, you realise that he was issuing a very serious warning about the government’s political choices. The logical conclusion of what he said was that the Greek Cypriot side was being taken on very dangerous adventures by the Papadopoulos government.
The question is: Is Marcos Kyprianou aware that he also has a responsibility to take us off the dangerous course on which the government has put us, that would inexorably lead to a two-state solution? I think that at this moment in time, with the way things are developing, he is the person who can help, more than anyone else, stop our march towards partition.

In last week’s column in Politis, Louis Igoumenides wrote that Kyprianou’s candidacy in the forthcoming presidential elections offered the only realistic prospect of preventing a second term for Papadopoulos. I fully agree with him. Unfortunately, there is no other candidate who would have a chance of defeating Papadopoulos in next year’s elections.
Kyprianou needs to understand that he has a moral obligation, even if this means putting his political career at great risk, to try to stop the course towards the permanent partition of our country, on which the current government has put us. If he does not even try, he would bear a big share of the responsibility for what will happen. He cannot point a finger at the abyss, while staying in Brussels watching indifferently as we move closer to it. He needs to find the required courage to take the big risk.

The fact that this is being written by someone who, until a month ago, would suffer a physical reaction every time the name Kyprianou was uttered must count for something.

Is this the man to topple Tpap and put us on the right road for unity.

Great post brother, It seems that Kyprianou has a pragmatic perspective and sets a good leadership stance that should be taken on board as a way forward

Having spoken to a few cypriot friends in cyprus they tell me that people like kyprianou who spend loads of time in Brussels actually start to broaden their horizons and adapt the european way of thinking and change for the better, they mentioned a couple of other names but alas it has slipped my memory but the point is that Tpap will never become european in his attitude hence why one of the reasons he is bad for cyprus.

yes indeed a European attitude and leadership persepctive is not critical in leadership for Cyprus - Well done to Kyprianou - He is a Cypriot to be looked up to as in inspiration to Cyprus
