Post Northern Cyprus in 2005
Hi all,

Im a Cypriot living outside of Cyprus so on a recent visit back home i decided to go over the border onto the occupied side. I wanted to give you some insight into the Northern side of Cyprus... if you are thinking of going or you have been it would be great to hear your comments too.

We left through Nicosia and drove through Lapitho to Kyrenia. Every 10km there was a Turkish army base with soldiers patrolling. There was a Invastion of 1974 war memorial the Turks built to symbolise what they say is the coming of the homeland Question

The Turks have not maintained the land at all, the roads are just passable, there is a lot of rubbish. Its a shame because the landscape is so beautiful. They are re-building the old houses that still belong to Cypriot people... My family is not from an occupied area, but to see someone rebuilding and upgrading my house and living in it would be devistating, knowing that i cannot claim that as mine and uphold my right would be unfair in this day and age.

This is still an illegal invasion, but it seems the Turks are just getting on with things and trying to live their lives on illegally claimed land.

It would be great to hear your experiences in the occupied side Cyprus.

Yia sas,
AK.

Dear Mr/Mrs Admin, i have spent 5 years in Northern Cyprus and in that time i have never seen an Army barracks every 10 km like you allege and feel that your entire description is false at the very best.

All the best

brother, welcome to JusticeForCyprus.com!

Northern Cyprus is full of army bases! where were you living? i know the area around Lapithos has army bases if not every 10km then every 15km (i didnt take measurements at the time im sorry - but they were everywhere).

My description is REAL. This is what i saw brother

You cant tell me i didnt see rubbish everywhere like it was a dump, people rebuilding OUR houses, roads that are poorly maintained, dirty casinos as far as they eye can see.

Are these not the truths of the North brother?

I welcome your personal depiction of Northern Cyprus 2006 and your experiences there that prove me to be wrong.

Regards,
Admin

Very Happy

I have not been to the south for 30 years despite being from the village of 'Tohni' the one where the EOKA B murderes massacred my family and friends, the North has as many army bases as the South and many GC homes are in good repair as TC live in them unlike our homes in the South that have been burnt or knocked down so we may never return.

The north does have many casinos but the GC from the south are the ones that use them Wink

Have you ever thought of why everything is in disrepair? It's called EMBARGOES. You do not support any economic sanctions to be lifted and then you have the audacity to come here and talk about the lack of maintenance of the north. I am sorry that the TCs do not have a money tree in their backyard.

LIFT EMBARGOES NOW!!!!!

my mums home was turned to a storage barn so there where no people living in it but it was still locked up so we couldnt go in to look but we did go to the garden and look around.

my dad was from rizocaparson and when we went there the roads are worse then kyrenia in my apinion my dads home was a small farm house in rizocaparson it use to be occupied by a turkish settler but he died a few years ago so now the sons of that turkish settler use my dads home to stay in it when they visit cyprus from Turkey and it was also locked up so i couldnt go inside my dads home to look around but we went on the farm garden and it was nice. also what i did not like about visiting my dads village i went to see apostolos andreas monastry and there where all these turkish market stalls there becasue lots of Greek Cypriots visit that monastry

your right i do not support economic sanctions to be lifted infact i think it should be sanctioned more if the TC's want the embargos to end then they should tell the illegal Turkey Army to leave they are suffering from embargos from there own consquenses but you cant use the excuse that the lack of maintenance is due to the embargo because Turkey gets lots of financial Aid from America and infact the lack of maintenace does not bother me at all what bothers me is the illegal settlers and the turkish military they should leave now i dont beleive in negociations until Turkey pulls out its military and illegal settlers or they should be sanctioned and also Turkey itself should be sanctioned
