Euro MPs question Papadopoulos' willingness for Cyprus deal
Euro MPs question Papadopoulos' willingness for Cyprus deal
Quote:
Members of the European Parliament visiting Turkey expressed concerns yesterday over the stance of Greek Cypriot leader Tassos Papadopoulos for a settlement of the decades-old Cyprus dispute.
ìWe have many doubts about his readiness until now to really go forward to a political solution, Hannes Swoboda, one of the vice presidents of the Socialist Group in the European Parliament, said at a press conference here.
He said Papadopoulos should find a way to meet with Turkish Cypriot President Mehmet Ali Talat more often and to keep making practical steps forward, if he really wanted a political solution.
Swoboda noted that the Cyprus question has both legal and political aspects, adding that the implementation of the protocol by Turkey was a legal aspect, while the division of the island was a political one. ìMr. Papadopoulos thinks from a legal point of view and underestimates the importance of taking a political step forward to come closer to a solution,î he added. ìThe sign would be if Papadopoulos were to take a strong initiative. He is much stronger than Mr. Talat.î
Jan Marinus Wiersma, who is also a vice president of the Socialist group, said Papadopoulos should engage himself more towards a political solution, rather than losing himself in technical details.
He said he met with both Papadopoulos and one of the government partners on the southern part of the island last year and asked them to be ìmore active and to be more engaged because we see there is a certain willingness on the Turkish side in Cyprus to start a process but the process will not continue if the Greek Cypriot side does not cooperate.

With Euro MP's noticing that Tpap is the problem that the Cyprus problem is not moving forward has imo put the gc administration in a tight spot that the suspension of Turkeys membership negotiations will not happen due to not opening their ports to ROC shipping.
I have always said that Tpap is part of the problem and never will be part of the solution due to the fact that he is one of the dinosaurs of the cyprus problem whose idea's are as outdated as he is, i am sure many enjoy hearing that he stands up to Turkey and demands this and that but what most do not realise is that the EU was founded on pragmatic values and meeting half way rather than getting stuck on the Tpap way of "my way or no way" and this imo will cost the GC people a lot and has already hurt them on the international stage.

Yes brother, perhaps Tpap is playing the 'my way or no way'. Could this be another excuse to blame someone and point the finger for not having a solution to the Cyprus problem yet? Also, in perspective from the EU and Talat ofcourse they will say this as they are blaming Tpap for not having a Cyprus solution yet and for Turkey not having EU membership yet (even though Turkey has countless issues on thier side to address before they are accepted as an EU member).
In addition I must stress. .how can Tpap be given so much crtiticism when he simply wants a fair and reasonable solution. He is representing Cypriot public concerns here. What has been going on for the last 32 years with Turkey and Denktash and then Talat with a solution to the Cyprus problem? Avoidance, Avoidance, Avoidance. . . A strategic plan that will fade memories and allow oblivious generations to be born into the problem with no concern. Now that Turkey want accession to the EU and the EU would rather address this process sooner than later .. so who gets the blame and the pressure?? Not Turkey or the evil Denktash and Talat but Tasos Papadopoulos

Yet again the EU is founded on the principles of pragmatism rather than deadlock hence that is a concept that Tpap has not understood just yet and why he is seen as the current problem to the cyprus problem, with Turkey wanting EU membership she has no choice but to be prepared to negotiate any decent offering and Talat who has been elected on the grounds that he will negotiate unlike Denktash will also sit down and talk if a reasonable deal (whatever that may be) is put forward and that is why they are not seen currently as a problem.

Yes, however one must see the high level of pressure that is being put on Tassos Papadopoulos. . it is tremendous. . Perhaps Turkey and the EU are still not offering a reasonable solution to the Cyprus problem.
Just because the time is right for EU and Turkey to have a solution, it doesnt mean it is whatever they want - the needs of Cyprus and Tpap also need to be taken into account . .only then we will get a solution

The time was right back in 1963 and after 40 years of misery on our island the time is right whenever the opportunity shows itself, this misconception that the needs of the GC need to be taken into account is a myth at best as any plan that is put forward envisions that both sides will lose a little and gain a little in various ways and no one will get all they truely desire and we must remember all the plans have the input of both sides and is not just plucked out of the air.
You really should go and read my thread on "Tpap and his distortions" and see what the UN, EU and various leaders say about him and the way he negotiated, distorted and the backstabbing policies he follows, he really is the worst man you could ever want to be in charge of your goverment.

Maybe Tpaps hasnt moved on from 1974. The only reason why there is so much pressure on the Tpap is because of the EU and Turkey. Perhaps another leader would be more suited to solve a more pramatic problem and make certain sacrifices. Another thing is that Turkey and the EU see that Tpap's is asking for too much? Maybe its the EU and Turkey that need to change and adapt thier approach in order to deal with Tpap and come to a solution?

So the EU, Turkey, TC and most of the civilised world is all thinking the same thing but its Tpap that they should all listen too????
The only true solution here is to see Tpap for what he is, an outdated dinosaur that has no place in the cypriot top job or negotiating the cyprus problem, we got rid of our Denktash and now it is your turn.
One more thing Annan before his departure from the UN top job is going to make a statement that the only reason the cyprus problem is stalled is Tpap just like he did with Denktash at the time and this info comes from a reliable source, WATCH THE PAPERS AND NEWS as Tpap for all his ability achieves only one thing and that is to get the GC internationally and in the EU isolated and on its own.
