 2006 Missing Soldiers Memorial Services
Hi All
In August this year, right throughout Cyprus, the missing soldiers of 1974 were remembered as they have been remembered for the last 32 years.
Church services were held at churches in close proximity to the military bases and camps (stratopetha) of the relevant missing soldiers.
Parents, family and friends attend the church service and military memorial and painfully remember and miss thier lost children.
Here are some photos from the Church and military memorial service in Eurichou (near Troodos), August 2006

Hi There Pitsilia
Yes I did attend to remember our missing and lost loved ones. These missing Cypriots went to war for Cyprus and didnt come home. It was a very emotional and sad day. We will never forget.

Ermmmm...without belittling others pain the truth is these soilders of 1974 were EOKAB and went to war for Greece and ENOSIS and in most parts were MURDERERS that killed TC and GC alike for their fascist dreams and i will never accept to honour them for the atrocities they committed on cyprus and her people.

rubbish, they went to war for Cyprus. They went to war to defend Cyprus from Turkey. Why did Turkey invade? Who did they go to war for? The GC soldiers went to war to defend from the invading Cyprus. Nothing more nothing less. How can you make such ignorant and generalist statements?

You need to read your history books and start to recognise the real truths of the war in cyprus.
Quote: Although Makarios had effectively abandoned enosis in favour of an ‘attainable solution’, many others continued to believe that the only legitimate political aspirations for Greek Cypriots was union with Greece. In September 1971 Grivas secretly returned to the island and formed EOKA-B, a vehemently pro-union organisation. Over the next few years it would repeatedly try to overthrow Makarios. In early 1974 Grivas died and EOKA-B fell under the direct control of Taxiarkhos Dimitrios Ioannides, the new head of the Junta in Athens. Ioannides was determined to bring about enosis as soon as possible. Fearing the consequences of such a step, in early July 1974 Makarios wrote an open letter to the military dictatorship requesting that all Greek officers be removed from the island. On July 15, Ioannides replied by ordering the overthrow of the Archbishop.

Quote:EOKA-B was a Greek Cypriot right-wing pro-enosis paramilitary organisation formed in 1971 that was supported by the ruling Greek military junta which came to power in 1967 overthrowing the legitimate Greek government of Panayiotis Kanellopoulos. The organization is commonly referred as a terrorist organization by Turkey and the United Kingdom[2] because EOKA B was engaged in the murder of civilians. This terminology was shared by President Makarios on his speech at the UN following the coup.[3]
When George Grivas returned to Cyprus in 1971, he created EOKA-B in response to President Archbishop Makarios' deviation from the policy of enosis. He was angered by Makarios' rejection of enosis in 1959 and was further riled when the President reaffirmed this position on his re-election in 1968. Grivas took the reins of EOKA-B and attempted to overthrow Makarios in order to achieve enosis through violent means.
Whereas EOKA (1955-59) were seen by the majority of the Greek Cypriots as anti-colonialist freedom fighters, the EOKA-B did not have the overwhelming support of the Greek Cypriot population, who where skeptical over the organisation's involvement with the unpopular Greek dictatorship.[citation needed] They did not want to swap their newly found independence for direct rule from Athens. The organisations unpopularity increased after attacks on Greek Cypriot socialists and supporters of independence, while public outrage followed the murder of government minister Polycarpos Georgadjis and a botched assassination attempt on Makarios.
When Grivas died from heart failure in January 1974, the new leadership of EOKA-B increasingly came under the direct control and influence of the military junta in Athens. On July 15, 1974, the EOKA-B with approval of the Greek Dictator Dimitrios Ioannides and the help of the National Guard, launched a military coup, overthrowing Makarios and installing Nikos Sampson as the dictator of Cyprus. This action served only to provoke a Turkish military invasion on July 20, 1974, leading to the subsequent de facto division of the island.

Does this help.

yes this does help but what about the Cypriots (not Greeks from Greece) that are still missing and that are missing because of the 1974 invasion by TURKISH military?? I have relatives that are part of this group whose fate is unknown. They were not all involved in EOKA and were at the hands of Turks

Unfortunately both sides are still dragging their feet on this, i am from the village of Tochni and EOKAb murderers killed in cold blood 94 men and boys and then moved the bodies to secret locations and are still to be found, 11 of my cousins lost their fathers that fateul day, also many TC just disapeared like another cousins of mine who is still looking for his father, it is probably safe to say they were all murdered but we cypriots being family orientated people demand that their remains be returned so we can give them proper burials and be able to visit their graves to light incense, leave flowers and say a prayer, there is many a person that needs to be bought to court for crimes against humanity, we my friend SHARE this pain of our missing together irrelivant of who committed the crimes against our people.
My condolences on your families loss and if i ever knew anything to help solve this i would tell it as it is in a shot.
