 SHOULD THERE BE ANY MILLITARY FORCES IN CYPRUS
This discussion of millitary in cyprus should be addressed hence i hace started a poll for us to see what all members think, i for one would like to see all troops out and have not one single soilder wether foreign or home grown as if we turned every person on the island into a soilder we still would be no match for any surrounding country hence your thoughts and why you voted the way you did, this is a learning curve so all comments are greatly appreciated.

I cannot agree with you more brother. I think you will find that most Cypriots, particularly males, are unhappy about the the compulsory 26 months military service they must do when they turn 18. In the south it is very hard to excuse yourself from this service. In the north, payment of an excusion fee is accepted. On the other hand, there is a harsh reality and threat of danger or even possibly war that is in the throughts of all Cypriots. although most Cypriots do not want anymore war, each soldier leaves the army with weapons that they must securely store (and not use) in thier house. They also must check in to military grounds once or twice a year through most of thier adult lives. With such a huge number of troops on Cyprus (somewhere well over 100,000) coupled with the current role and part that military service plays in Cypriot culture - how can we make changes to this huge issue?

This my friend would be our bravest step of them all, we the cypriot people make barely a million souls and when compared to surrounding countries that have populations that can have a millitary force the same as our entire population we are generally fooling ourselves, wasting our tax payers money and inviting trouble and of course wasting our young mens lives.
Imo what we could do is stop millitary service and have a professional paid millitary that is part of NATO so those who want to be soilders (there is always a few) can serve in other countries and also honour their country with their service but on our island we will have no soilders just a police force and a special force police that has some millitary training for extreme situationa like terrorism etc.
What do you think, can you add or take away from that picture.

Who will guarantee the rights of GC and TC if there is no military....? UN? EU? Greece? Turkey?
No military at all is impossible and will never happen.

Either the UN or EU or both, but no millitary is only impossible in your mind not reality imo.

There are some countries with no / limited national guard.
for instance Panama... got rid of their military in 1990
Also Costa Rica forbid a standing army in 1949

We the cypriots need no millitary, the armies of Turkey, Greece, UK and US are more than enough whom are all NATO allies and the fact we let the Brits have the bases in cyprus means we will always have millitary presence, the only way in my mind to a utopian cyprus is to eliminate the millitary and take a Neutral stance on all foreign policy without siding against anyones interests, we can offer as good will gestures waring states the chance to come to cyprus for peace talks a bit like the US camp David and generally foster the hopes of peace and unity with our cypriots as a prime example of how people of different language and religion can co-exist peacefully and also together show how peace is the only option for man kind, this is the sort of legacy we should all be aiming to leave to our children and grandchildren.
So i shout the slogan;
NO MILLITARY IN CYPRUS, ALL ARMIES OUT
WE THE CYPRIOT PEOPLE WISH TO LIVE IN PEACE WITHOUT THE THREAT OF WAR
